A Certain Hope

I find myself waking up each morning, and within seconds, suddenly remembering the ongoing situation we are facing. The impact of COVID-19 on those of us here in the United States is unprecedented: lives lost, jobs vanished, plans put on hold. As the virus spreads, I fear for what the people of Guatemala might face. The reality that could unfold there may be even more dire.

As of this writing, there are just 70 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Guatemala. That number is certain to climb. The Guatemalan government has taken this emergency seriously, closing borders, enforcing curfews, and declaring a country-wide stay-at-home order.

Reaching New Heights

Several members of New Castle Presbytery are traveling in Guatemala this week to spend time with CEDEPCA and the Association of Mam Christian Women for Development. Yesterday, we attended the Association’s bi-annual Assembly meeting and all we can say is WOW!

Two New Churches Join the Partnership!

We are delighted to report that two churches in New Castle Presbytery have jumped on board and joined the Guatemala Partnership!

IMG_1229 (2)First, the mission committee of New Castle Presbyterian Church (located in Old New Castle, Delaware) is sponsoring their own microloan group. On May 5th, committee members presented a check to two members of the Guatemala Partnership team. These funds will support 12 women in a new microloan group as they launch their self-sustaining projects planting potatoes and raising small livestock. New Castle Church is also establishing a prayer partnership with these women, and plans to send one or two representatives to travel to Guatemala next January to visit this group in person and see their projects in action!
