The global impact of COVID-19 is unprecedented. But for those already living in vulnerable communities in Guatemala, the effects of this crisis are even more devastating. The government has put curfews in place and halted public transportation, making it difficult for people to get to work or shop in the markets for food.

In response to this crisis, we are teaming up with CEDEPCA and the Association of Mam Christian Women for Development to provide additional support to those in need. Our first initiative is supplying Emergency Food Kits that will feed a family of five for one month. And we need your help!

A Certain Hope

I find myself waking up each morning, and within seconds, suddenly remembering the ongoing situation we are facing. The impact of COVID-19 on those of us here in the United States is unprecedented: lives lost, jobs vanished, plans put on hold. As the virus spreads, I fear for what the people of Guatemala might face. The reality that could unfold there may be even more dire.

As of this writing, there are just 70 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Guatemala. That number is certain to climb. The Guatemalan government has taken this emergency seriously, closing borders, enforcing curfews, and declaring a country-wide stay-at-home order.

Better Together

Winding our way up the Pan American highway through the cloud-topped Sierra Madre mountains of the western highlands of Guatemala, we headed for Xela. We were meeting an amazing group of women and would witness a defining moment for the Association of the Mam Christian Women. What started many years ago was coming to fruition. Women with years of experience, those who had been mentored, and a second generation of daughters were empowered and working together to lead a robust array of successful projects. Read more
