Chickens on the Menu

The last two and a half weeks here in Guatemala have been filled with some of the most fun, meaningful, productive, and magical days I’ve had in this country – and that is saying a lot because every trip has been an amazing experience (as many of you know!) And the response we have received from you during this trip has been inspiring – with your blog comments, your donations, and your emails asking what this year’s Advent project is going to be. (The answer is the Chicken Project and our holiday campaign will begin on Giving Tuesday, December 3, but feel free to give now if you’d like!)

Literacy in Las Barrancas

This week, I am traveling to various communities that work with the Association to visit different projects, accompanied by energetic staff and board members, a driver and an interpreter. (My Spanish is decent but not quite good enough for in-depth discussions, plus most conversations in rural areas have to be interpreted from Mam to Spanish to English).

Joy – Pure and Simple (part one)

If you’ve had a rough week, read on. Pure and simple joy still exists.

Last week, I had the honor and privilege of adventuring with eight young teenagers from the Utz Pan bakery project of Jesus es El Camino Church in Guatemala city. Accompanied by Pastors Emerson and Mardoqueo and driver/church member Kevin, we traveled five hours west to Xela for a week of learning, fellowship, reflection, EATING, hiking, and swimming. There were too many moments of pure and simple joy to count.

For many of these kids, this was the first time they had traveled far from their neighborhood, hiked a mountain top, breathed in the fresh air of nature, seen back-of-house operations of a bakery and restaurant, and had time to just relax and enjoy each other. There were non-stop smiles and giggles (and lots of napping on the bus).
