In a recent post, Cathy Higgins shared how she and some Westminster and New Castle Presbytery (NCP) members traveled down to Guatemala in early 2015 to sign a three-year agreement between the Association of Mam Christian Women for Development and the Mission Development Unit of the NCP.
As the agreement was due to be resigned, the scope of the partnership increased from the Mission Development Unity of the NCP to entire NCP and the Association through 2020.
It was truly a powerful moment to reestablish this agreement with such inspiring women. Nearly the entire Association Board was in attendance all traveling in from their respective area within the Highlands. Association Coordinator, Rosario Diaz, graciously hosted the ceremony in her kitchen.
There was singing of favorite hymns and expressing gratitude from both groups all leading up to the signing of the covenant. It was such a great opportunity to reflect on the progress made over the years past and what lies ahead.
One moment that truly stuck out was when Felipa, The Association President, signed the covenant. Back in 2015 when the first agreement was signed, although able to read, Felipa never learned to write. As a reflection of the importance of her role as the signatory to the document, she learned and practiced to perform this function.
Felipa is one of many living embodiments of how access to education, health, spiritual ties, and income-earning potential empowers oneself, one’s family, and one’s community. She has the ability to impart that wisdom and spirituality gained through her affiliation with the Association to her surrounding communities and lead by example.
For those interested in the NCP and Association covenant, here is an unsigned copy. All components agreed and signed to are written as is.
