Did you know…
• 2.4 billion people live without improved sanitation?
• One in ten people has no choice but to defecate in
• Diarrhea caused by poor sanitation and unsafe water
kills 315,000 children every year?
• Diarrhea caused by unsafe water, poor sanitation
and hygiene is linked to 50% of child undernutrition, which can lead to stunted
physical and mental development?*
In 2015, the United Nations launched an initiative to ensure that everyone, everywhere has access to toilets by 2030.
Joining with our partners in Guatemala, Westminster is actively
working toward this goal.
In March, we officially launched our Ventilated Improved
Pit (VIP) Latrine project. These VIP Latrines are designed
specifically for the Highlands of Guatemala and directly benefit
the women we work so closely with from the Association of
Mam Christian Women for Development.
Each VIP Latrine costs $360. The donor pays $310, and the
recipient family is required to pay $50, which is a significant
investment as many of these Guatemalans are living on a
dollar or two a day.
We are thrilled to report that since March 2017, we have
received $15,000 from individual members of Westminster for
VIP Latrines. That equates to 50 latrines – truly an impressive
launch! Please join us in this important effort by visiting
our information table in Community Hall during the 10:TEN
education hour at 10:10 a.m. on Sunday, November 19 (World
Toilet Day!) to learn more about VIP Latrines.
We also hope you will consider making a gift. Donations of any amount
are welcome. Checks can be made out to Westminster
Presbyterian Church with “VIP Latrines” in the memo line.
