In late June, 15 members of Westminster will travel to the Western Highlands of Guatemala for a week-long intercultural encounter. The group will consist of nine Senior High youth, two young adult leaders (Josh Cox and Chris Hickey), and four adult leaders
(Susan Moseley, Cathy Higgins, Carrie Saathoff , and Mike Gnade, Sr.).
You may have noticed that we are calling this a “partnership” trip, not a “mission” trip, and for good reason.
“Mission” trip denotes that we are going to Guatemala to do something for the people there – paint a wall, build a house, plant a tree. Last time we checked, Guatemalans are fully capable and hard-working people, and can handle these jobs without our “help.”
Instead, we are traveling to Guatemala as
partners – walking with them as equals, as friends,
as children of God. We will immerse ourselves in
Guatemalan culture, share dreams and struggles,
and simply spend time together in fellowship
and recreation. More formally, we have been
invited by Iglesia Presbiteriana del Verbo Divino (Presbyterian Church of the Divine Word) near San Juan Ostuncalco to establish a partnership with their youth group.
So what does a “partnership” trip look like?
Here are a few hints from our itinerary:
- Visit Rosario Diaz – tour her clinic and deliver supplies and funding
- Attend professor-led classes to learn
about Guatemala’s history and the
current socio-economic state of the country
- Spend time in a rural home and see water filters and latrines in action
- Play soccer on top of a volcano and construct a 9-square with our new friends
- Experience a Sunday worship service, help teach Sunday school, and participate in bible studies
- Meet our prayer partners face-to-face
We hope you will support this group with interest, encouragement, and prayers – and invite you to attend our official commissioning at the 10:00 a.m. worship service on June 18. During the trip, you will have the opportunity to follow our journey here.
